Junya Watanabe by Comme des Garçons
Junya Watanabe approaches fashion as a process of transformation. Working from within the Comme des Garçons universe, the Japanese designer has spent more than three decades taking the familiar — military uniforms, workwear, tailoring, denim, technical fabrics — and rebuilding it through unconventional cutting, volume and construction. The collections are defined by an almost architectural attention to form. Garments are layered, deconstructed and reassembled, with contrasting fabrics and unexpected proportions creating silhouettes that feel both highly engineered and instinctively wearable. A military jacket might become something sculptural; traditional tailoring can be disrupted by exaggerated volume; everyday denim is treated with the precision of couture. There is an intelligence to the clothes that reveals itself gradually. Nothing is decorative for its own sake — every seam, texture and alteration serves the larger silhouette. Junya Watanabe is fashion as experimentation, where technical ingenuity and cultural reference meet in pieces that feel entirely their own.
